Chaconne is to be enjoyed and savored on at least four levels. Mr. Mastroianni's account of growing up in an Italian family on the East Coast is revelatory and makes you feel part of this clever, kind young boy's experiences. All throughout both his childhood and adulthood, we follow the evolution of an obsession: in this instance, to play J.S. Bach's Chaconne on the classical guitar. Interspersed chapters transport us to the 18th Century with original insights into that composer's life. The novel culminates with a life-changing experience while a helicopter pilot. In all this, we can see Mr. Mastroianni as a remarkable man, and what's more, eminently likable! You will enjoy Chaconne!
